{DIY} Splatter Painted Cowhide Rug

When we first opened Blithe Boutique, we were seeing cowhide rugs with gold splatter painting on them everywhere. I'm sure you've seen them too. And if you've seen them, I bet you've seen the price tags! We desperately wanted one, but refused to spend that kind of money on something we were certain we could do ourselves.

We bought a cowhide rug in Canton for a great price, but we were afraid to put paint on it for fear of ruining it. That rug has been faithful to us since the beginning. It has spent it's life smack dab in the middle of the store and been trampled over and played on for over two years. When we redid the window display last weekend (post on that coming soon), we decided it was time to move the rug to a new home in the store. We also decided since it was decently beat up at this point, that maybe we could do that gold splatter painting we've wanted to do for so long! I can't believe we didn't do it sooner. Y'all. This is seriously so easy. Here's how you can do your own. Now, pay close attention. It's pretty technical.

Supplies:
Cowhide Rug
Metallic Gold Spray Paint
(yep, that's it.)

Before we started, we made sure the rug was nice and clean. And by we, I mean Jessica. Let's be honest: I don't like to clean.

Here are the steps. Ready? I'm going to tell you all of them at once. Like I said, it's pretty technical. Read carefully.

Spray a generous amount of the metallic gold spray paint into the cap. Fling the paint on the rug. Let it dry. Seriously. That's it.

By using the paint in the cap, and since spray paint is so thin, you get those BIG splotches. You won't get those if you try traditional splatter painting methods. You know, like a toothbrush like you did in Kindergarten.

I'm sure you're thinking the same thing I did: "And people charge hundreds of dollars for these?!" That's right folks. You can have your own in about 5 minutes with minimal effort and it's almost impossible to mess up!

We chose to use ours in one of our newest merchandising projects at the store! It would also look great in a living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen...the possibilities are endless!

Now, go make something beautiful!
