From Softly Shabby to Beautifully Bold
One thing daughter #1 and I share is a love of color. She has an amazing eye for which colors work and has a practical, working relationship with color. I have color memory, more of an emotional response to color.
Together, we created the first palette for my chalk finish paint. The colors were inspired by childhood memories, fabrics, and things I love. When I used the paint on the furniture pieces sold at our once a month Barn Sales, customers started asking to purchase it. So we made it available for our DIY friends, who love the ease of getting a durable, vintage finish with our paint. As a result, The Sale At The Barn Etsy Shop opened, and I am also excited to share that we have recently expanded into the retail market!
With all the hoopla about the Pantone 2013 spring colors, we knew it was time to add some bolder choices to our softly shabby palette.

With all the hoopla about the Pantone 2013 spring colors, we knew it was time to add some bolder choices to our softly shabby palette.
Here's how we started:
Then we did this:
This technique is highly technical, involving scraps of paper, paint, and our fingers. We test colors on whatever is handy, grabbing bottles, cans or tubes of paint and mixing on whatever we have nearby which could be a scrap of wood, an old receipt, or the back of our hands.
I like to call this little masterpiece Quest for the Perfect Orange
When we know in our gut that our interpretation will translate to real furniture in real homes, we have our palette custom matched and mixed for us.
After adding in the chalk, we package the paint in these cute pints. All designs for the packaging are done by daughter #1. Seems she has a gift for graphics as well.
Not to slight daughters #2 & #3! Their insight into naming the paints, and helping mix and package is a huge part of the process. Especially when I try out names, and they patiently respond with, "Ummmmm... no." and "Mom. Really?" over and over until we reach a creative consensus.
My best half is also very involved as the ultimate encourager (who finally admitted this time he couldn't compete in the naming game). His willingness to pack and ship, run errands, and help wherever needed is a huge gift to us all. While I'm working on this post, he's over at the barn building a window display for Blithe. This really is a family affair, and I am truly blessed with the gift of this crazy team!
Finally...
Our Spring 2013 Palette of Beautiful Things Chalk Finish Paint.
You can find it here and I think you will love it!
Happy Painting!
Y.
